Now-deleted tweets from 100 Thieves jungler William “Meteos” Hartman critical of his team’s decision to bench him for Week 4 led to an official response on Monday by the team and general manager Christopher “PapaSmithy” Smith.

“Reflecting on the first three weeks where we find ourselves 1-5, we no longer feel our current trajectory meets our stated goal and the level we’ll require in order to make worlds,” PapaSmithy said in a video on Twitter. “Therefore, for us, roster changes were a logical conclusion in order to start the rebuild towards Top 3.

“Regarding Meteos, we’ve talked to Will about multiple different scenarios that may best suit his needs. We are willing to run a six-man roster that he can be a part of, stepping into academy is on the table and honestly any opportunities around 100 Thieves or elsewhere are all on the table when it comes to Meteos.”

Meteos made two tweets Sunday night following 100 Thieves’ lost against Team SoloMid, both which he later deleted.

“This is gonna sound like a troll post but just got word that I’m being benched after Week 3 summer again XD,” he said in the first tweet. “Not sure why I expected anything different.”

“Pretty weird to hear the players on my team didn’t know about or agree with the decision,” the second tweet read. “All credit goes to [our coach Tony “Zikz” Gray], [coach Joseph “JungleJuice” Jang] and PapaSmithy. Clearly the people not on the team know what’s best for it.”

Following the deletion of his first two tweets, Meteos made another: “Maybe it’s a blessing,” he wrote.

Shortly after, 100 Thieves confirmed it would bench Meteos in favor of Juan “Contractz” Arturo Garcia, as well as starting support William “Stunt” Chen in favor of Academy support Philippe “Poome” Lavoie-Giguere. In Week 3, 100 Thieves lost to both Counter Logic Gaming and Team SoloMid, netting their fourth and fifth loss on the summer split.

In the spring, 100 Thieves placed third in the regular season with a record of 10-8, after beating FlyQuest in one tiebreaker, then losing to Evil Geniuses in a second. The team went on to narrowly lose to Team SoloMid in five games in the losers’ bracket of the 2020 League Championship Series Spring Split Playoffs. The team now is tied for eighth with Immortals.
