Roger Federer secured another victory for Team Switzerland in the Hopman Cup on Thursday with a 7-6, 7-5 win over USA’s Jack Sock.

Federer opened the match with an ace, giving his opponent an idea of what was to come, putting Sock under pressure to make a number of unforced errors in the opening set. Nonetheless, the American held out to a tie-break, eventually losing.

Sock put up a good effort against the former world no.1 but Federer was back on form in the second set, and able to serve out the set to win, despite a few errors on his part.

In previous rounds, Team Switzerland claimed clean sweeps against both Japan and Russia.

Still to come on Thursday, Federer’s team-mate Belinda Bencic will play CoCo Vandeweghe before the mixed doubles match between USA and Switzerland.

In the morning session at Perth, Russia took on Japan, with Karen Khachanov despatching Yuichi Sugita 6-4, 6-2, while Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova could not hold off Naomi Osaka who won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. In the mixed doubles match, Russia won 4-1, 4-0.
