John Lynch wants the 49ers to be the NFL’s best hot spot.
The team GM said he wants San Francisco to be the place players want to go during their free agency, especially with the hype surrounding quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his giant five-year, $137.5 million contract.
“It’s 75 degrees and sunny outside, we’ve got this guy, who wouldn’t want to be here?” Lynch said, via the team’s website. “We want to become that. We want to become a destination where everyone wants to be. We’ve got a long way to go. We were 6-10, okay, so this is a big day for us, but we have a long way to go, and we’re fully aware of that.”
Before starting Garoppolo, the Niners were 1-10. However, the team won all five games the former Patriots quarterback started in.
“Winning a bunch of games at the end of the year, is that a good thing? Absolutely. But does that guarantee us anything? No,” Lynch said. “The work we do this offseason, that will guarantee us what our prospects are and what our success is going to be.”
San Francisco also has the largest amount of cap space heading into the offseason, which is also another tactic Lynch wants to use as a lure for free agents.
